This cave in Birzebbugia, formerly the hiding spot of Hasan, meanders deeply into the cliff face. The cave has numerous caverns and tunnels that open up into the cliff edge, and also that delve further inland. Legend has it that Hasan kidnapped a girl from a neighbouring hamlet and held her captive in this cage.

The Chapel of St Andrew was originally built by German prisoners stationed in Malta after the Second World War. After the departure of British forces stationed in Malta in 1979, the chapel fell into disuse. It was in the late 80s that Richard England was commissioned to restore and offer a new lease of life to this disused chapel.

The Church of St Joseph in the Village of Manikata is an architectural icon and is the first major commission of Architect Richard England, given to him by his father upon his return from studies in the studio of Gio Ponti in Milan, the church breaks away from the Baroque influenced churches that precede it, and in turn explores a regional approach, drawing inspiration from the prehistoric temples and the traditional farming Girna.

4th Series / 1986 — 1988

The 4th Series a more refined representation of the island is split across all denominations. On the LM5 we selected, one can notice the island life, Malta as a tourist destination and local crafts which are still around us today. Here we also see a blend of two important aspects: the serious issue of money, coupled with expression, beauty and joy of leisure time on the islands.

5th Series / 1989 — 1993
With the 25th anniversary of our independence in mind, the 5th series celebrates key points in our nation’s history that lead to Malta becoming an island state. As the smallest denomination in the series, the LM2 makes reference to some early milestones in this long journey when Maltese earned their Carta Magna in 1428. The note also features the Banka Guratali in Mdina & Gozo as some of the earliest administrative councils of the city.
